UPDATE EDITION 03/2017 | THE THIRD HUMAN HAND: SYCOTEC MOTOR SPINDLES IN ROBOTICS

“Industry 4.0” will fundamentally change the world of production and work – and open up whole new possibilities for automation. Robots with almost unlimited agility and sensitive sensors are taking tasks away from people. When these get too heavy, monotonous or dangerous for them to perform, for example. The robot is therefore becoming an intelligent work assistant that shares the workplace with humans.
Experience the fascination for robot technology at the SycoTec Stand at EMO 2017 in Hanover! An innovative KUKA robot of sensitive LBR iiwa series demonstrates its diverse applications. However, the robot becomes the perfect third human hand just with the right tool drive: the SycoTec motor spindles for maximum precision and efficiency.
The right drive for every application
SycoTec offers a wide range of powerful motor spindles which can machine the workpieces quickly, reliably and with total precision. Their power output ranges from 250 W to 5 kW, they turn at speeds of up to 100,000 rpm and deliver torque of up to 2.15 Nm. Choosing the right spindle depends mainly on what it will be used for.

The all-rounder

The new high-frequency motor spindle 50100 AC-duo lives up to the requirements of flexible production in a special way: It has two tool holders and can perform two different machining steps with them, without the need to change tools. That saves time and boosts productivity. Holes of different diameters, or drilling and subsequent grinding of a workpiece – a piece of cake for the 50100 AC-duo spindle. The motor spindle delivers a considerable power output of 3 kW, reaches a torque of up to 1 Nm and a top speed of 50,000 rpm.
As the tools are fixed in precise ER16 holder systems, the 50100 AC-duo motor spindle works with the familiar high precision of SycoTec. Another plus point: It can be easily installed on industrial robots with the aid of an adapter.

Open to variations

But what happens if the intended purpose cannot be precisely predicted? While the last job was still about deburring aluminium, the next automatically integrated job will probably require the machining of plastic. In an environment such as this, the spindle used should have sufficient power reserves, be easy to install, and compatible with standard drives such as Siemens, Delta, Parker or Emerson. The motor spindle 4060 ER or the sister model 4060 ER-S are the right solution for this. Both are noted for having a higher power density than the competition. Their low weight of just 3.5 kg also allows them to be used on smaller robot arms. And despite the high level of precision, both spindles are surprisingly inexpensive.

Always the right solution to hand

For easily machinable materials such as glass fibre parts, the above-mentioned, low-cost spindle 4060 ER with relatively low speeds of between 3,000 and 24,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 2.15 Nm is suitable.
The situation is similar with the milling of aluminium profiles in the automotive industry. For example, sills, roof rails or roof-mounted luggage carriers can be machined using two to three AC motor spindles 4060 ER-S at speeds of up to 50,000 rpm in a single machine.
As the material’s wall thickness increases, so, as a rule, do the requirements for the speed of the spindle. Customers have had very good experiences with the SycoTec motor spindle 4061 DC-S. At a maximum output power of 3 kW and speeds of up to 60,000 rpm.
Even higher requirements are placed on the milling of composites. This is where the motor spindle of type 4064 DC-HSK25 impresses with speeds of up to 50,000 rpm and a maximum 5 kW of power.
Compared to this 3.5 kg spindle, the SycoTec motor spindle 4040 DC-S comes across as a real lightweight. Weighing in at just 1.7 kg, it is ideally suited for the precision deburring and chamfering of gears or pinion shafts.
